Iceland (known as Ísland in the official language of Iceland, Icelandic) is a Nordic island country between the Atlantic and Artic oceans that debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1986. The debuting entry “Gleðibankinn” (eng. Bank of Fun) by the band named ICY gave its country 16th position. The results kept reoccurring until 1989, when Iceland finished last for the first time in its history. The past mistakes were analyzed, and the next year Iceland finished in 4th place with Stjórnin and their “Eitt lag enn” (eng. One More Song). Since then, Iceland has been steadily coming up in the first fifteen places until 1999, when Selma, with her song in English, “All Out of Luck”, finished second, giving Iceland yet the best result.

The fame took over, and while 2000 witnessed a decent 12th spot, in 2001 Iceland once again finished last. The introduction of a Semi-final was a bit painful for Iceland, with a streak of three non-qualifications from 2005 to 2007. The Nordic country once again found out the recipe for success, and while 2008 was okay, in 2009 it rocked the stage with Yohanna and her song “Is It True?”. Later on, while Iceland brought decent results in the Semi-finals, it never converted back to the glorious days in the Finals, finishing at top in 15th place. Since 2015 to 2018, the country has faced a four-streak of non-qualification, with the last one coming up dead last for the third time in Icelandic history. In 2019, however, the country brought Hatari, who ultimately finished in 10th place. Iceland once again delivered a successful attempt in 2021 when Daði og Gagnamagnið with the song “10 Years” finished in 4th place. Then it was followed by Systur in 2022, and Diljá in 2023.

Hera Björk is set to compete for the Icelandic flag in 2024.
